Glass vs Plastic

Glass vs Plastic

Meghan Griffith

The candle, beauty, and skincare industries have long relied on plastic packaging for their products. However, as the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of plastic waste, many companies are turning to glass as a more sustainable alternative. Here are some reasons why glass is a better choice for the candle, beauty, and skincare industries.

Glass is more eco-friendly than plastic

  • Glass is made from natural, abundant materials such as sand, soda ash, and limestone, and it is 100% recyclable. On the other hand, plastic is made from non-renewable fossil fuels, and it can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. By using glass packaging, companies can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Glass is better for the product

  • Glass is impermeable, meaning it does not allow air or other materials to pass through it. This makes it ideal for storing products that are sensitive to light or air, such as essential oils and fragrances. In addition, glass is inert, which means it does not react chemically with the products inside it. This ensures that the product remains pure and does not become contaminated by the packaging.
Glass looks "better"
  • Glass packaging has a more luxurious and elegant appearance than plastic. This is especially important in the beauty and skincare industries, where the packaging is a reflection of the quality of the product inside. Glass also has a higher perceived value than plastic, making it more appealing to consumers.
Glass is easier to recycle than plastic
  • Glass is one of the easiest materials to recycle, and it can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality. In contrast, plastic can only be recycled a limited number of times before it degrades in quality. Glass can also be recycled in a closed-loop system, meaning that it can be recycled and turned into new glass products without any loss of quality.

When it comes to recycling, glass has a much lower environmental impact than plastic. Glass takes around one million years to decompose, but it can be recycled infinitely without losing its quality. On the other hand, plastic takes about 500 years to decompose, and only a small fraction of it is actually recycled. Most plastic ends up in landfills or the ocean, where it can harm wildlife and pollute the environment.

If you're looking to recycle glass, here are some tips on how to do it properly:

  1. Rinse the glass container with water to remove any residual product.

  2. Remove any lids or caps and recycle them separately.

  3. Place the glass container in your curbside recycling bin or take it to a recycling center.

  4. Make sure the glass is not broken or shattered, as this can cause injury to recycling workers and damage recycling equipment.

Glass is a better choice than plastic for the candle, beauty, and skincare industries. It is more eco-friendly, better for the product, looks better, and is easier to recycle.

By choosing glass packaging, companies (and consumers) can reduce their carbon footprint, improve the quality of their products, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
